Tucked away in the quiet village of Birisha on the leeward side of Mt. Kenya lies St. Monicah Birisha Comprehensive School — a humble institution that has served its community for more than three decades. For years, access to digital tools and quality learning materials felt like a distant dream.
On 26th July 2025, that dream became a reality.
A Digital Leap Forward
Thanks to the Rotary Club of Nairobi Thika Road, the school is now home to a fully equipped Digital Literacy Lab — a vibrant space where students can explore technology, build 21st-century skills, and broaden their learning horizons.
Funded under the Elimika Grant, this milestone represents far more than computers and internet access. It is a doorway to opportunity, equity, and hope for children who once learned under very tough conditions.
A Day of Joy and Gratitude
During the handover ceremony, wide-eyed students, proud teachers, and grateful parents gathered to witness the unveiling. As one parent whispered amid applause:
“It’s like watching a dream unfold right in front of our eyes.”
The transformation went even further. In collaboration with Oxford University Press and the Rotary Club of Karen, the school also received a generous donation of over 1,000 books to complement the government’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and boost literacy development.
Rotary Leaders Speak
District 9212 Governor Wairimu Njage, an educationist at heart, reminded the community of Rotary’s mission:
“Every child, no matter where they are born, deserves the chance to thrive in a digital world.”
Club President Ruth Munyi reaffirmed the club’s long-term vision:
“This is just the beginning. Our goal is to equip more schools in marginalized areas because true development starts in the classroom. Digital literacy is no longer a luxury — it’s a necessity.”
Lighting the Way Forward
St. Monicah Birisha Comprehensive School becomes the third school to benefit from the Rotary Club of Nairobi Thika Road’s Digital Literacy Initiative, a campaign to bridge the digital divide in underserved communities.
As the sun set over Birisha that evening, it marked not just the launch of a computer lab, but the birth of new dreams. Through the power of collective action, Rotary International District 9212 continues to light the way — one school, one book, one child at a time.
