A Day of Transformation: Rotary Handsover Refurbished Library & Learning Materials to Thunguma Comprehensive School

Nyeri, March 29, 2025– On a bright Saturday morning, the heart of Nyeri Town pulsed with purpose as Rotarians, well-wishers, and education champions converged at Thunguma Comprehensive School for a momentous occasion-the official handover of a refurbished library and learning materials under the Basic Education and Literacy Project.
The project, a testament to collective goodwill, was made possible through the generous contributions of Rotary members, their families, friends, and valued partnerships with publishers. What was once an under-resourced space is now a vibrant learning hub where children can explore the world through books, dream bigger, and compete on a global scale.
Beyond the library, the day carried more gifts for the school. Nyeri Town MP Maina Mathenge, through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), officially handed over a newly built ablution block, ensuring improved hygiene for the students. The air of celebration was further lifted by the presence of Principal Secretary for Gender, Ann Wangombe, who donated funds to address the school’s immediate needs.
Among the distinguished guests were Sub-County Director of Education Rose Boiyo, the Deputy County Commissioner, members of the Board of Management (BoM), the Parents Association, and the wider school fraternity—all united by a shared commitment to empowering young minds.

In a powerful show of continued support, MP Duncan Mathenge pledged 40 desks for Grade 9 students, ensuring they learn in a conducive environment. Meanwhile, Rotary Club of Nairobi Thika Road, along with friends and family, committed to equipping the teachers’ staffroom with new desks and chairs—a crucial step in enhancing the overall learning experience.
These initiatives are more than just donations; they are investments in a future where children from public schools can dream and thrive just as their peers in private institutions do. With access to resources, they can shift their mindsets from limitations to possibilities, from local to global aspirations.
No Rotary visit is complete without a lasting imprint, and this day was no exception. To symbolize growth and sustainability, participants planted trees, leaving behind a legacy that will flourish alongside the students who walk through Thunguma’s gates.
For the Rotarians present, the true reward was not in the bricks or books, but in the beaming smiles of the children—smiles that carried hope, curiosity, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. Through the simple yet profound power of literacy, they now hold the keys to a world beyond their current circumstances—one filled with endless opportunities.
As the sun set over Nyeri, the words of Nelson Mandela rang true: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” And on this day, a community came together to place that weapon in the hands of the next generation.
